A 16‑year‑old Class 11 student from Gaighata went missing on Thursday evening. Her family reported her disappearance to local authorities, who quickly launched a search. The victim was later found dead, with clear signs of abduction, rape and murder. Investigators have recovered evidence linking the crime to a suspect who has been taken into custody.
The police claim the suspect was identified through CCTV footage and forensic findings. He is being held on charges of abduction, sexual assault and murder. A joint task force is continuing to examine the victim’s last known movements and any possible accomplices.
The incident has raised concerns among parents and school officials about student safety. Local leaders have demanded increased police patrols and better emergency response protocols, especially around schools and residential areas in Gaighata and neighbouring villages.
