The Ganga and Fulahar rivers are now running within a few hundred metres of each other along the Malda district in West Bengal, raising concerns among residents and authorities.

The close proximity increases the likelihood of joint flooding during heavy rains, potentially damaging agriculture and infrastructure.

In response, the West Bengal government has announced a project to alter the courses of both rivers, aiming to reduce flood risk and protect local communities.

Local officials say the plan will involve dredging, levee strengthening and channel realignment, and will be undertaken in phases over the next few years.

Residents in Malda are urging the state to expedite the project, citing recent flood damage and the need for long‑term safety.
