Howrah Station to Gain 13‑Storey Complex and New Subway for Improved Transit

Kolkata’s Howrah railway station is set to receive a 13‑storey commercial and service complex along with a revamped subway system. The development aims to ease passenger flow, provide retail and office space, and strengthen the station’s role as a regional transport hub. Construction is expected to finish by mid‑2025, promising smoother transfers between trains, metros and buses.

A new 13‑storey building will rise at Howrah station, offering retail outlets, offices and passenger amenities. The structure is designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing station layout. In addition, the underground passage will be upgraded to accommodate higher footfall and provide better connectivity to the metro and bus terminals. The project is part of a broader initiative to modernise Kolkata’s transit infrastructure and reduce congestion.

The expanded subway will feature wider corridors, improved lighting and digital signage to guide commuters. It will also connect directly to the newly constructed complex, creating a one‑stop destination for travelers. Local authorities expect the development to reduce waiting times and increase the station’s capacity to handle peak‑hour traffic.

Construction is underway with a target completion date in 2025. Once finished, Howrah station will become a more efficient and commercially vibrant hub, benefiting daily commuters and the wider Kolkata metropolitan area.
