Kolkata’s Lenin, Marx, Ho Chi Minh Roads Listed for Renaming by BJP

The central government’s renaming agenda has earmarked three Kolkata streets—Lenin Road, Marx Road and Ho Chi Minh Road—for name changes. The move, part of a broader effort to replace roads bearing communist and left‑wing names, has sparked debate among residents and political groups. While the BJP cites historical and ideological reasons for the change, local leaders and activists argue for preserving the city’s diverse heritage. The proposed renaming is currently under review by municipal authorities.

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has added three Kolkata streets—Lenin Road, Marx Road and Ho Chi Minh Road—to its list of roads slated for renaming. The move follows the Bharatiya Janata Party’s policy to replace place names associated with communist ideology. Local officials and community members have expressed concerns that the changes could erase part of the city’s multicultural past. Proponents of the renaming argue it aligns with national policy objectives. The final decision will be taken by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation after consultations with stakeholders.
