Last Maoist Central Committee Member Asim Mandal Arrested in West Bengal

The last surviving member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) central committee, Asim Mandal, was detained by West Bengal police in a surprise operation. Mandal, who has been a key figure in the insurgent group, is believed to have been operating from the eastern districts of the state. The arrest marks a significant blow to the Maoist movement in the region. Authorities say the operation was part of an ongoing counter‑insurgency drive.

Police in West Bengal conducted a coordinated raid that led to the arrest of Asim Mandal, the only living member of the Maoist Central Committee. Mandal, who has been involved in the insurgency for decades, was apprehended while traveling in a vehicle in the eastern part of the state.

The arrest comes after a sustained counter‑insurgency campaign by state and central security forces aimed at dismantling Maoist networks across West Bengal. Officials say the operation was carried out with intelligence support and involved both field officers and intelligence units.

Mandal’s capture is seen as a major setback for the Maoist organization, which has been active in parts of West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand. The party had previously lost most of its leadership during a series of arrests.

Security agencies will continue to investigate Mandal’s role in Maoist operations and any potential links to other insurgent cells in the region.
