Supreme Court Clears Mir Bilquis to Coach Indian Kayaking Team for Asian Games 2026

On September 10, the Supreme Court overturned a Jammu & Kashmir government order that had denied sportsperson Mir Bilquis permission to travel. The court cited pending departmental inquiries and service conditions as reasons for the denial. With the order quashed, Bilquis is now cleared to travel and take up the role of coach for the Indian kayaking and canoeing squad at the 2026 Asian Games.

The Supreme Court, in a decision dated September 10, annulled an official directive that had barred Mir Bilquis from traveling for the Asian Games. The court highlighted that departmental investigations were still underway and that certain service conditions had not been met, which had led to the denial.

By quashing the directive, the Court effectively reinstated Bilquis’s eligibility to travel and assume her coaching responsibilities for the national kayaking and canoeing team.

The move comes as the 2026 Asian Games approach, and the Indian sporting community welcomes the decision, which is expected to strengthen the team’s preparation.

Jammu & Kashmir’s sports authorities had previously cited administrative reasons for the denial, but the Supreme Court’s intervention has clarified the legal standing of the sportsperson’s travel and coaching rights.
