Tamil Nadu Assembly Records Reveal M.K. Stalin Was Political Prisoner During Emergency

Newly released Tamil Nadu Assembly minutes show that former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the national Emergency. The evidence comes from diary excerpts of late MP Chittibabu, who was imprisoned at the time. Former CM M. Karunanidhi inserted these passages into the official record to document the political repression of opposition leaders. The disclosure offers fresh insight into the political climate of 1975‑77 and Stalin’s early resistance activities.

Tamil Nadu Assembly minutes that were recently opened to the public confirm that M.K. Stalin was detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency period of 1975‑77.

The confirmation comes from excerpts of the prison diary of late Member of Parliament Chittibabu, who was held in custody at that time. The diary entries were incorporated into the Assembly record.

Former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi ensured that these diary passages were entered into the official minutes, thereby preserving evidence of the political repression faced by opposition leaders.

The revelation provides a new perspective on the political climate of the Emergency era and underscores Stalin’s early involvement in opposition politics.
