Abhishek Banerjee, a prominent Trinamool Congress (TMC) figure, was taken into police custody on Tuesday morning as part of an investigation into a street clash that took place earlier in the day in a Kolkata locality. The clash, which involved TMC cadres and members of an opposition party, reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation.
During the transport of Mr. Banerjee to the police station, supporters lined the route and shouted slogans in his favour. The crowd’s rallying chants were recorded by local media and shared across social media platforms.
Police officials have not yet disclosed the specific charges or the legal basis for the questioning. The authorities are examining evidence related to the alleged altercation, including CCTV footage and eyewitness statements. The case is part of a broader context of heightened political tensions in the city, with several incidents involving TMC supporters and opposition members in the past weeks.
The TMC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or the stance of its leadership on the matter. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have called for a thorough investigation and expressed concern over the growing street violence in Kolkata.
