The state’s sports ministry announced a new policy that will govern all adventure sports activities across West Bengal. Emphasis will be placed on safety protocols, mandatory training, and licensing for operators and participants. The policy will also mandate the construction of proper safety infrastructure such as harnesses, helmets, and rescue teams at popular adventure sites. It is expected to attract more tourists to the region while ensuring that all activities meet national and international safety standards. The government will monitor implementation through regular inspections and audits.
This initiative follows growing interest in adventure tourism in West Bengal, especially in the Himalayan foothills and coastal areas. By codifying safety measures, the state aims to reduce accidents and enhance the reputation of its adventure sports sector. Stakeholders and industry bodies have welcomed the policy, noting that clear regulations could boost investment.
The policy will be rolled out in phases, with the first tier covering high-risk activities such as rock climbing, white-water rafting, and paragliding. Subsequent phases will extend to other adventure sports like trekking and caving. The government plans to collaborate with local authorities, NGOs, and private operators to ensure smooth implementation.
