Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during a press briefing in Kolkata, declared that 20 TMC MPs who have openly rebelled against party leadership will be disqualified from their positions. The statement was made in the context of the upcoming national elections, where the TMC aims to consolidate its vote base.
The MPs in question have been vocal critics of party policies and have participated in protests that have drawn criticism from the party’s central committee. Banerjee’s remarks suggest that the disqualification will be pursued through the House Committee’s recommendation to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
Political analysts warn that the move could deepen rifts within the TMC and affect the party’s performance in West Bengal. The disqualification process, if initiated, will involve a formal inquiry and a vote by the House of the People.
The TMC’s spokesperson has not yet responded to the allegations, and the opposition parties have called for a transparent review of the disqualification grounds. Meanwhile, the central government has remained silent on the issue.
The decision is expected to influence the political dynamics in West Bengal and could have repercussions for the broader national political landscape as the general elections approach.
